As I’ve been doing more public speaking lately, I ran a “Speaking with Confidence” workshop for a few friends, which was so useful, not just for the participants, but for me too! This was some of the feedback…
"Thanks for the workshop Kerrie, it was amazing! I used the tools you shared when I spoke at my friends wedding yesterday, and was really happy with it." Kylie Robinson, Dubbo

I’ve been thinking about some of the people who have influenced me in this area – the first person who comes to mind at the moment is Lisa McInnes-Smith. Lisa is one of Australia's most loved female speakers. Her heart-warming message of inspiration captures hearts and changes lives forever.
So whether you are a confident communicator or shudder at the thought, you will enjoy what Lisa shares below…
Cheering you on,

Today's success tip comes from Lisa McInnes-Smith.
With over 20 years of speaking experience, Lisa is recognised among the top inspirational speakers in the corporate world. She has spoken in 20 countries and has shared the stage with two American Presidents among others.
They say that the best way to overcome the fear of public speaking is by 'just doing it'. But what can people do if they are absolutely terrified of public speaking and 'just doing it' is not that simple?
Any highly trained professional can be very fearful when it comes to communicating their message in a public forum. While I have no formal training in public speaking I am often asked to teach it to others. I have some very simple strategies to help people relax while speaking in front of a crowd:
Never talk about anything that you don't know a great deal about - if you can't have a conversation about the topic with another person one-on-one, then you definitely can't present this topic to a group. Always practise one-on-one before you attempt the crowd. It will prevent you from performing and encourage you to speak to the group as if you are speaking to one.
Avoid trying to please everybody - you never will, and you'll water down your message until it's of no use to anyone. One person with a conviction is much more powerful than a room full of people with an opinion. People who live by their convictions and follow through with actions to prove it are inspirational.
Draw from your own experience - you are the number one expert on yourself and your life. Drawing from your own experience always makes you an original instead of a copy. Mediocre speakers use other people's material. Top-level speakers have both the personal conviction and the experience to back it up. Don't be afraid of drawing on your own life lessons. You'll rarely need to use notes because you know your own life better than anyone!
Use visuals that are part of your life experience - I was teaching an IT expert to make his seminars more interesting and while trying to identify his personal interests, I discovered he was a drummer in a band on weekends. I invited him to bring his drum kit to the next training session. Suddenly, he was on an adventure! Gone were the long seminars of information download. In an exciting and short time his seminars were the talk of the town, and receiving top marks for every area of feedback. He was a new man with a new audience, having a ball. What a difference a prop made!
Don't underestimate what you have, but don't overrate it either - be transparent, be yourself, and be prepared to deliver what you know when the opportunity presents itself. I remember standing in front of 2,000 professional speakers from all parts of the globe reminding myself that it was simply my turn to give. I had been receiving from my peers for years and it was my opportunity to share with them what had worked well for me. I chose to give them the best of what I knew and not withhold anything.
