Kerrie Phipps Meets Ray Martin

Today Ray Martin, one of Australia’s most senior and influential Corespondent’s was in Dubbo for a book signing (his book of course). Kerrie caught up with him and he seemed genuinely interested in Lifting The Lid On Quiet Achievers as he grew up in a regional area himself.

Ray Signed Kerrie’s copy of his book for her and she signed his copy of Lifting The Lid. Nice!

Insights From The Kitchen

Insights From the Kitchen.

Life is like cooking; deviate from the recipe every now and then - and see how it tastes.

Now I can follow a recipe like the best of them and I had wanted to be a chef when I was a kid.  (But I wanted a social life, not the hours of a chef.)

At home we cook a lot of Thai food (we love it,  and we know we’ve found a good Thai restaurant when the aroma and taste of the food makes us feel as if we are on the streets of Bangkok).

When Kerrie returned from 2 weeks in Thailand (several years ago) I was so pleased to see her that I said she could pick any restaurant she wanted to go to as a celebration of her return.  Kerrie picked… drum roll please… you guessed it… the local Thai restaurant!

Anyway,  when I was cooking a thai curry the other night, making it the same way I always do; the thought occurred to me “why don’t I deviate… experiment… stray from my usual recipe?”  We were pleasantly surprised by the result.

Life is a bit like that.  Every now and again (or every day if you’re keen), challenge yourself to try something new.  Then life won’t become monotonous.

You never know.  You may just like it.

One of my favourite questions is -
When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Love to hear your comments below… Do you have any Insights From The Kitchen?

The Black Door!
Monday, November 10th, 2008

I was chatting to a friend the other day who was in a bit of a conundrum. He did not like where he was but uncertainty and fear kept him tied to something that was wearing him down. Eventually it will (he admits this himself) burn him out.

Can you relate to that? I certainly can. Several years ago I left a job that I enjoyed but was wearing me out and keeping me from my family. I wanted to spend time with my son before he went to school and decided it was time. But uncertainty and fear kept me from doing this.

Nearly 12 months later I came across a story about The Black Door and I came to a realisation. I was afraid of the unknown. Anyway… to cut a long story short I bit the bullet and resigned to spend time with my family. Was it a wise move financially? Maybe not in the short term… But I wish I had done it sooner because money cannot buy what I gained.

Here is the story that impacted me so powerfully…

There is a story of a black door, a young man and a Persian general.

The young man, it is said, was a prisoner of war, and the general was a very fair man. When the day arrived to decide the fate of the prisoner, the general had him brought before him. The young man was certain of death, but the general generously gave him two choices. On the young man’s left was a firing squad, guns poised ready. On the right was a plain white wall with a large black door in the middle of it. The young man was given leave to determine his fate…the firing squad or the black door.

The young man made his choice and in a short while a volley of shots rang out and the prisoner crumpled to the ground. The general shook his head and commented to his aide that in all his years he had seen only a few men choose the black door. May I ask, sir, the aide queried … what lies beyond the black door? Freedom, the general replied. The black door leads to freedom, but I have seen only a few men choose it because they are afraid of what horrors may lie beyond. Most would rather choose a fate that they know, even if it means death, than experience the unknown. The man brave enough to choose the black door deserves to be free.

To day, in the world of business, change is constant, and those afraid to experience change are in a precarious position. Trends in business are changing, and business and career choices once thought to be safe and stable are no longer so. The advice our parents gave us – to go to university, get a good education and get a good job with a company who would take care of us for the rest of out lives – is no longer true. Company restructuring, downsizing and retrenchments have caused abrupt changes inadequate to take care of a family’s needs. And yet, there are choices to be made, and those brave enough to make them will survive the economic crunch

Are you ready to choose The Black Door??

Thinking Logically

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when
you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:

1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
2. An old friend who once saved your life.
3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car?

Think before you continue reading. This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application.

You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first.

Or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back.

However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer.

He simply answered:
“I would give the car keys to my old mate and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.”

Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations.

Never forget to “Think outside of the Box”.

Malcolm Gladwell (one of my favorite authors and speakers) wrote a book called “Blink”. It really is an amazing book on how we think, and how sometimes we think too much.

Certainly worth reading, but if you don’t have that sort of time then the summarized version is on the Create the Life Club website and is the book in a nutshell. The great thing is, it’s only 8 pages.

Since reading this book I am certainly more aware of “my thinking” than before.

Have a great day

A Good Use of Time…

At this very moment I am sitting outside enjoying the sun and waiting for Ethan (my son) to finish his music lessons.

Often I just kick back and relax, but today, I had the lap top and thought I would make the most of the time and check out some of the new content on the website. Then thought “why don’t I share it with you.”

What a great Idea!

Here is what I listened to and it only goes for 10 minutes. 5 minutes to write this and I still get to relax for 15 minutes.

In this audio presentation you will discover:

* The one thing you need to know about sustained individual success
* Why you must find out what you don’t like doing and stop doing it
* How to excel as a manager
* Why you should focus on your persistence and drive
* Why we have a weakness fascination
* Discover why building up your strengths is crucial to your success
